Award for Sand Pits Donation
On April 1, 2013 Governor Terry Branstad awarded the Chris Rayburn Family of the W.G. Block Company a “Gift to Iowa’s Future Award” for their generous donation to Iowa and its natural resources.
This award is to recognize, celebrate, and honor those public-spirited individuals and corporations who have donated land, land value, or a conservation easement to benefit Iowa’s parks, trail, fish and wildlife habitat, natural resources, open spaces, and public recreation areas and for other public uses and benefits.
In December 2012, the Rayburn Family donated 435 acres of ground to the Muscatine County Conservation Board to be used as a public recreation area. The area currently known as the “Sand Pits,” was formerly a quarry owned by the W.G. Block Company. This area contains over 120 acres of water in numerous lakes and ponds, and will open to the public on April 20, 2013.
